Typical garage door repair prices in Cairns
Most straightforward repairs — a snapped lift cable, a set of worn rollers, or a remote that needs re-programming — start from $120. That covers the part, my time, and getting the door running safely again.
Spring replacements are the next step up. Torsion and extension springs are under huge tension and wear out over time; replacing them starts from $220 depending on the door size and whether it's a single or double door. I carry the common springs, so most are done in a single visit.
If the motor or opener has died, a new unit including installation starts from $450. The cost depends on the brand, the lifting capacity your door needs, and whether I'm re-using your existing remotes or you want new ones.
Every job is quoted upfront before work starts, so you'll know the exact cost before any work begins.
What actually drives the cost
Four things move the price: the door type, the springs, the motor, and access. Sectional doors (the most common in newer Cairns homes) and roller doors have different parts and labour. Tilt doors are often older and can need more fiddling to source parts for.
Springs are the biggest single variable. A single torsion spring on a standard double door is one job; a heavy commercial roller door that needs paired springs and a winch is another. Bigger doors and heavier lifts cost more in parts and time.
The motor matters too. A basic chain-drive opener is cheaper; a screw or belt-drive unit, or one with battery backup (handy in cyclone season when the power goes out), costs more. And access — a door that's easy to get to and work on is quicker than one jammed into a tight carport or behind stored gear.
Signs your garage door needs a service
Catching it early is cheaper than waiting for a breakdown. Book a service if you notice any of these: a grinding or squealing noise, the door struggling or slowing down, a sag in the door when it's halfway up, the auto-reverse not tripping when you test it, a remote that only works up close, or the door coming off its tracks.
A door out of balance puts strain on the opener and shortens its life. A quick service — balance check, lube, and a safety test — is a lot cheaper than burning out a motor.
Repair or replace — how I decide
If your door is under about ten years old and the frame, panels and tracks are in good shape, a repair almost always makes sense. A new spring or cable and it's running like new.
If the door is older, the panels are dented or rusting, or you've had two or three breakdowns in a year, it's often better value to replace — especially with a cyclone-rated door built for Cairns conditions. I'll always tell you straight, show you the numbers, and let you decide. I'm not going to talk you into a new door you don't need.
Why a yearly service matters before cyclone season
Cairns weather is hard on garage doors — salt air, monsoonal rain and cyclone-season winds. The door is the biggest moving surface on most homes, so when a storm hits it cops the brunt of the wind. A door that's out of balance or has a weak spring is far more likely to fail — or come off its tracks — exactly when you need it to stay shut and secure.
That's why I always recommend a yearly service in October or November, before the wet season. Lube the rollers, check the spring tension, test the auto-reverse, tighten the brackets. It's a small job that prevents the expensive, stressful kind — a door stuck open in the middle of a cyclone.
